#57 - Maximum Minimum

3rd of February 2017

Kicking my minimalism journey into overdrive in 2017 will be a challenge.

As I mentioned in the previous post, the year has started bumpily. We’re already into February, and I’m a couple of grand behind where I’d hoped to be financially.

To help claw some of that back, and to keep pushing the minimalist reset, I’ve decided to do something fairly drastic. I’m going to find one thousand of our possessions and sell them.

I’m confident they’re there.

During last year’s move, we decluttered aggressively. Compressing the contents of a large detached bungalow into a top-floor two-bed flat forced some hard decisions. We took a fairly ruthless, objective approach and asked ourselves why we still owned certain things at all.

I reckon we got rid of about 30% of our belongings during the move. The rest were given “temporary” homes. Most ended up in the loft, with a smaller stash living in my mother-in-law’s shed. We promised ourselves we’d deal with it all once we’d settled.

That didn’t happen.

Life got in the way. Winter arrived. Christmas came and went. Suddenly, we were months down the line, wondering how it all happened so quickly.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be gathering up the surplus items and selling them on eBay and Gumtree. Each item will get a number, and I’ll post details of the sales here. If you see something that might be useful to you or someone you know, feel free to reach out.

The goal is simple. Less clutter. Less weight. More mobility.

When we next move, I don’t want to be dragging a ton of unused crap with us just because it’s easier to ignore it.

Wish me luck as I attempt to get rid of even more stuff I don’t need. And if anything catches your eye, you know where I am.

Until next time,

adieu.
